Biography

Paula Lopez Y Diaz was born in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico around 1929 to Agapita Diaz Y Lozada.[1] Agapita died on 3 August 1937 and her children were sent to live with their grandmother, Michaela Lozada.[2][3]

Census

1920 US Census - "Guadalupe Lopez", Age 18, is enumerated as head of household in a rural area of Montones, Las Piedras, Puerto Rico with his wife Maria Lebron de Lopez, Age 45. Also present and listed as boarders are: Natalia Lopez Y Santana, Age 38, probably the mother of Lucia, Age 15; Margaro, Age 11; Juan, Age 7, Everegista, Age 4, and Marcelina. Age 8 months. Also present is Agapita Diaz, Age 20

1935 Puerto Rico Census - "Agapita Diaz Vda De Lopez", Age 18, is enumerated as head of household in a rural area of Montones, Las Piedras, Puerto Rico with her children, surnamed Lopez Y Diaz: Leoncio, Age 10; Paula Age 6; Must, Age 2; Severiano, Age 1

1940 US Census - "Micaela Lozada Vda De López", Age 64, is enumerated as head of household in a rural area of Montones, Las Piedras, Puerto Rico with her Lopez Y Lozada grandchildren by Agapita: Leoncio, Age 20; Natalia, Age 11 (Paula?); Narcisa (Musa?), Age 7; Severiano, Age 5

Research Notes

The 1935 PR Census has the surname "Lopez" for Agapita's children.[4] The one birth record I can find for them, that of Leoncio, has just the surname "Diaz" and doesn't list a father.[5] In 1920, two years before Leoncio's birth, Agapita's living in the household of Guadalupe Lopez and that's the name of the informant on her death certificate (which lists her as single).[6][7] Guadalupe is married to someone else--if the census data is to be believed, someone more than twice his age--and he's the only one in that household of the right age to possibly be the father of her children.[8] Suggestive, even if not enough for me to link him as the father of her children based on just this.
